Partnership will give seniors access to virtual care at long-term care and retirement homes in MED e-care’s network across Canada and reduce in-person visits

Med e-care your care, our mission

(Toronto, ON) March 24, 2020 MED e-care Healthcare Solutions Inc (“MED e-care”), a leading cloud-based health software platform for the senior care continuum, today announced an expanded partnership with Think Research, a developer of virtual care technology and clinical treatment protocols, to jointly respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Through the partnership, Think Research will deliver its award-winning VirtualCare platform to MED e-care’s long term care and retirement home operators globally. This will provide virtual access to experts and resources to help manage the health of residents in seniors housing and to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Seniors and people with underlying health concerns — such as diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease — are at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness. Long-term care homes are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks due to the nature of their living environment. COVID-19 transmission is also a significant concern for residents who live communally because of their proximity to each other and the infection’s ability to spread through person-to-person contact.

“With more than 20 years of providing ehealth solutions to residential care and long-term care homes, we are committed to providing solutions to front line care teams to mitigate the challenges and risks associated with COVID-19,” says Puneet Khanna, Chief Executive Officer, MED e-care. “We have developed and released MED e-care technical support guides to help manage COVID. Leveraging our relationship of successfully implementing the Clinical Support Tools from Think Research, they will continue to provide us current evidence based clinical resources that we can incorporate and make available to seniors homes to manage this crisis.”

In the long term, shifting to a virtual visit model helps to facilitate on-demand access for long-term care clinicians managing a large volume of patients. It may also reduce the need for in-person visits to primary care physicians and other specialists, or hospitalizations which can be difficult for seniors who have cognitive or mobility issues. This new model will also help to ensure care continuity should there be a shortage of physicians available to visit long-term care homes.

“During the pandemic, virtual visits have emerged as a logical choice to protect residents, staff, healthcare workers and support staff,” says Sachin Aggarwal, CEO of Think Research. “They ensure that people are still able to see their own doctors, who know them and their medical history while helping us to practice social distancing and flatten the curve by reducing in-person visits. We’re pleased to see Ontario taking proactive action to accelerate the use of virtual medicine by releasing new billing codes.”
